First C6 N/A Vette in the Nines . . .

Finally!

If you've been around the underground internet 'world' of cars within the United States, it seems that the fastest cars are ALWAYS in the northeast!
Whether it be ATCO Raceway, Maryland International Raceway, or whatever other track out there, they seem to consistently turn out some fast cars!

I won't get into the debate over whether this is due to the tracks themselves, better Density Altitudes in the area, or a higher concentration of tuners and auto enthusiasts in the northeast, but I will say that it seems consistent throughout the world of drag racing.

Well, I am proud to say, even though I personally have ABSOLULTELY NOTHING do to with it, that we have a record set at Sacramento Raceway here in California! A guy who goes by the forum name 'thesubfloor' over on the Vette Forums has just become the first N/A C6 (in other words, non-Z06, non-Zr1 C6 Corvette) to click off a 9 second pass. Now, granted, it IS an LS7 motor, but that's another debate in itself... :)

Enough rambling; here's the info on the car and the videos:
  • LS7 Motor
  • LS2 1-3/4" American Racing headers
  • Front skinnies (GTO spares) with M&H tires
  • Stock air intake and filter
  • Stock, unmodified A6 transmission
  • Stock intake manifold
  • Ported and milled heads (0.030") from West Coast Cylinder Heads
  • Lucifer cam from Carlos at Vette-Air
  • Stock LS7 injectors
  • B&M transmission cooler
  • Z06 3.42 gears
  • Borla Stinger catback
  • Yank SS3600 stall converter
  • Tuned by me with HP Tuners
  • Cartek line lock kit
  • 275/40/17 Hoosier drag radials on C5 Z06 rims with the tire pressure set to 18psi

Another perspective on the same pass:

Way to represent, West Coast!

World Record 6 Speed C5 Corvette

I have always thought of myself as a shift-it-yourself kinda guy, but I am definitely not on the level of some of these guys.

A new record has just been set in the Corvette world for a 6 speed car. Here's some info on the car:

Golen Engines Forged 402 ci motor
TrickFlow Heads
Ported FAST Intake
“Nitrous Pro-Flow” direct port Nitrous - 250 shot

“RPM” C6 ZO6 diff –

Ranger - Legend of the Stock Corvette

If you've been around the Corvette world at all (especially the Z06 world), you have probably heard of the guy who goes by the forum name of 'Ranger'. This guy is a legend when it comes to massaging absolutely astonishing times out of nearly stock cars.

From what I have gathered, his first 'claim to fame' was with the C5 Z06. How about a 1/4 mile time of 11.5@117 mph on a BONE STOCK 2002 Z06. Bone stock means bone stock in this case...stock air filter and stock tires, even!

Then, he put a cold air intake and drag radials on the car... (drumroll please)... 11.5 @ 120 mph!

And when the C6 Z06 came out, he did what any self-respecting Vette guy would do... and bought one of those too! His records are no less mind-blowing than the records with the C5 Z06, either...

BONE STOCK C6 Z06 - 11.1 @ 127 mph (stock filter, stock tires!!!)

C6 Z06 with drag radials ONLY - 10.8 @ 129 mph

(AND NOW COMES THE REASON FOR THIS POST)

He has just beat his own record and set a NEW WORLD RECORD for a C6 Z06, bone stock, with drag radials:

10.7 @ 129 mph!

Click on the picture below to check out the video...

He even has his own website documenting all these records!

A Tribute to the Daily Driver

If you are a frequent visitor to this site (really, who am I kidding - I might as well be talking to myself in the mirror, LOL), you are probably used to seeing 8, 9, and 10 second drag cars, 1500whp Gallardos, or some other kind of crazy automobile build.

It's time for a different kind of post.
A post that serves to remind us all of the mild-mannered, even tempered, non-cam loping, "starts every time", "don't have to monitor fifteen gauges while I drive", "don't have to be scared of police", mode of transportation.

When our high-maintenance project cars beckon for more boost, another bottle of nitrous, another headgasket swap, and another clutch replacement, our faithful, consistent, dependable daily driver sits and waits. Awaiting our next trip to the parts store, or to work, where we labor hard and long to make the money to buy - you guessed it - a bigger turbo, direct port nitrous, a built tranny, and a heavy duty headgasket with a head stud setup, old faithful sits and looks forward to the next oil change with NON-synthetic motor oil. Speaking of which, we are already probably late on that oil change by 2 months and 2,000 miles.

If you're a car guy, the lesson is simple. Get a daily driver; something you CANNOT modify with go-fast parts. It will serve you well. Unless you like the side of the I-5 freeway at 2AM. I've been there, and it's definitely not on my list of "Happy Places".

After, 220,000 miles, one blown-up engine (blown headgasket - probably my fault), and two grand-theft-autos (one recovery in Las Vegas, one recovery in Rancho Cucamonga), we figured our 1996 Nissan Altima could use a nice Christmas present. Oh, and strong work Earl Scheib paint shop in San Bernardino.

It will truly be a sad day when she goes. Here's to you, Altima.

The before pictures (these are actually from 2007 - it got worse since then):

The "After" Pics:

Now back to the regularly-scheduled posts involving vehicles with ridiculous horsepower-to-weight ratios that have been illogically stripped of normal, functioning options and creature comforts.

I've got to find another hobby.

Or not.

Buick History
Buick originated as an independent motor car manufacturer, the 'Buick Motor Company, incorporated on May 19, 1903 by Scottish-American David Dunbar Buick (who invented the overhead valve engine on which the company's success was based), Detroit , Michigan. Later that year, the struggling company was purchased by James H. Whiting (1842-1919), who moved it to his hometown of Flint, Michigan, and brought in William C. Durant in 1904 to manage its new acquisition. Buick sold his stock for a small sum upon departure, and died in modest circumstances twenty-five years later.
Durant after the acquisition of Buick soon became the largest car maker in America. Using the profits from this, Durant embarked on a series of corporate acquisitions, calling the new mega-corporation General Motors.
At first, manufacturers understand that General Motors competed against each other, that soon ended with Durant. He wanted to be a General Motors division to target one class of each purchaser, and in his new scheme Buick was near the top, only one was the Cadillac brand had more prestige.
In 1911, Buick introduced its first closed-body car,  four years ahead of Ford.  In 1929, Buick Motor Division launched the Marquette sister brand, designed to bridge the price gap between Buick and Oldsmobile, however , Marquette was discontinued in 1930.
Today Buick retains that position in the GM lineup. The target of the Buick was a client who wanted a comfortable car, but possibly not quite rich enough to afford a Cadillac or not desiring the ostentation of one, and I wanted a car on the market definitely above the norm. Buick is one of the oldest brands in the world, as the Mercedes-Benz, Renault, Peugeot, Cadillac, Daimler and the discontinued Oldsmobile.
Speculation  existed, however, as to whether GM will eliminate the Buick brand to cut costs. This followed the temporary suspension of GM's planned Zeta project to develop new rear wheel drive cars fitting the Buick market niche . GM also has started consolidating of Buick, Pontiac and GMC trucks into a single dealer franchises, which makes it simple to eliminate the Buick brand without leaving dealers devoid of product. However, with the development of the Zeta platform still ongoing (including the development of the 2006 VE Commodore and Chevrolet Camaro), it may be likely that Buick will survive still.
Buick began consolidating its lineup in 2005, replacing the Century and Regal with the LaCrosse (known as the Buick Allure in Canada), and the LeSabre and Park Avenue with the Lucerne in 2006. Both of its SUVs, the Rendezvous and Rainier were discontinued in 2007 to make way for the new 2008 Enclave, while the slow-selling Terraza minivan also was abandoned in 2008. That leaves the marque with just three models in the United States. There have been rumors about Edmund'seMotor Trend Buick will have a roadster sedan in 2010, which could mean that the marque survive beyond May 2009.
There is speculation that future Buick models will have interior and exterior designs with an increasing influence of China Buick. This is due to the overwhelming success of the Buick and a high reputation in China. Motor Authority has also written that it will introduce the Buick Excelle Buick in the United States in 2008.
